Election strengthens Donegal's influence within Sinn Féin's national leadership structures.

South Inishowen councillor Jack Murray has been elected to Sinn Féin’s national leadership body, the Ard Comhairle, following the party’s Cúige meeting in Mullingar.

The Ard Comhairle is Sinn Féin’s national executive and plays a key role in shaping party policy and strategy. Councillor Murray was chosen to represent members from the Midlands-North West constituency area, which encompasses 15 counties.

Speaking after his election, Councillor Murray said he was honoured to have received the support of party members. “I want to sincerely thank everyone who supported me and placed their trust in me. It means a great deal.”

Mr Murray, who first became a County Councillor in 2011 when he was co-opted to Donegal County Council, replacing Sinn Féin TD Pádraig Mac Lochlainn, described the importance of maintaining strong links with communities and ensuring that grassroots voices continue to be heard within the party.

“Our party is strongest when it is rooted in communities, listening to people, standing with them, and giving voice to their hopes, concerns, and ambitions,” he said.

The South Inishowen representative said he intends to be a strong advocate for members across the Cúige region.

“On the Ard Comhairle, I fully intend to be a voice for grassroots republicans across this Cúige, from Donegal to Galway, from Louth to Mayo, and across every county in between.”

Looking ahead, Councillor Murray said his election was also an opportunity to contribute to wider national goals, including social progress and Irish unity.

“This is about the bigger task ahead: building a fairer Ireland, advancing equality and opportunity, and moving with confidence towards Irish unity.”

“There is huge work ahead, and I’m proud to play my part,” he concluded.

Councillor Murray’s election marks another significant milestone in his political career and further strengthens Donegal’s representation within Sinn Féin’s national leadership structures.

The Buncrana councillor was also appointed as an alternate member of the prestigious European Union Committee of the Regions in early 2025, giving him a role in representing local and regional interests in Europe.

His election to Sinn Féin’s Ard Comhairle adds to a growing list of responsibilities at local, national, and European levels as he continues to play an active role in shaping policy and representing communities across the region.
