Spraoi agus Spórt is gearing up for its much-loved annual 5K Fun Run/Walk, which takes place this Friday, May 29, in Carndonagh.

Registration opens from 6.30pm at the Garden Centre, with participants setting off at 7.30pm. The route will finish in the Diamond, followed by tea, sandwiches, and prize giving in Unit 6, under SuperValu.

Entry costs €20 per family and €10 per adult, with organisers reminding families that all children must be accompanied by an adult.

Funds raised from this year’s event will support the running and upkeep of Spraoi agus Spórt’s disability bus service, which helps provide inclusive transport for children, young people, and adults accessing activities, camps, and community programmes.

Prizes will be awarded on the night for first, second, and third place in the men’s, women’s, and children’s categories.

Organiser Mary McWeeney said the annual event continues to be one of the highlights of the local community calendar.

“This event is always a brilliant way for families and friends to get active together,” she said. “It’s also the final celebration for our Couch to 5K programme participants, who have been training hard over recent weeks.”

The event has become increasingly popular in recent years, attracting runners, walkers, and supporters of all ages as more people embrace fitness, wellbeing, and community participation.

Participants can choose to walk, jog, or run the 5K route at their own pace as it winds through Carndonagh before finishing in the town centre.

Mary added that the atmosphere on the evening is always special.

“People love the encouragement, the sense of achievement, and the community spirit. It’s a really positive evening for everyone involved, and we’re looking forward to welcoming people back again this year.”

The event also marks the achievements of participants in the Couch to 5K programme, which supports people of all fitness levels in gradually building confidence and improving their health and wellbeing.

“Couch to 5K is designed for everyone from teenagers to adults and older people alike. Whether you walk, jog, or run, it’s about taking part and feeling good,” Mary added.

Organisers of the event say the Fun Run/Walk plays an important role in supporting Spraoi agus Spórt’s inclusive initiatives and services throughout the community.

“Every euro raised helps support our disability transport service, ensuring children, young people and adults can continue accessing activities, camps and programmes safely and comfortably,” said Mary. “Inclusion remains at the heart of everything we do.”

Spraoi agus Spórt also thanked this year’s supporters and sponsors, including Age & Opportunity, Donegal Sports Partnership, and North Inishowen Councillor Martin McDermott, for their valued support of the event.
