Step into Buncrana's past with a free Guided History & Folklore Walk

Participants will discover local stories and heritage along the picturesque Buncrana Shore Path.
Residents and visitors to Inishowen are being invited to discover the rich heritage of Buncrana's shoreline during a free Guided History & Folklore Walk hosted by Active Inishowen this afternoon.
The two-hour guided walk will begin at 1:00pm from O'Doherty's Keep/Castle Bridge and follow the picturesque Buncrana Shore Path. Covering approximately 5km, the event is designed to be easy and beginner-friendly, making it suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels.
Participants will enjoy a relaxed walk with regular stops to explore the fascinating history, folklore and local stories that have shaped Buncrana and its surrounding coastline. Highlights will include the history of O'Doherty's Keep, the scenic shoreline and the people and traditions that have left their mark on the town over the centuries.
The walk is ideal for anyone with an interest in local heritage, storytelling, nature or simply enjoying one of Inishowen's most scenic coastal routes in the company of others.
The Walk leader will be at the Castle Bridge approximately 15 minutes before departure, and participants are encouraged to wear weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable walking footwear. Bringing water and light snacks is also recommended, especially with high temperatures promised over the coming days.
Although the event is completely free, places are limited to just 15 participants; so advanced booking is essential. Organisers are asking those who have reserved a place to attend where possible, or to cancel in advance if their plans change, allowing others the opportunity to participate.
The Guided History & Folklore Walk forms part of Active Inishowen's Guided Walk Series 2026, encouraging people to enjoy the outdoors while discovering the unique stories, landscapes and heritage that make Inishowen so special.
For those looking for a relaxed afternoon of history, fresh air and local storytelling, this promises to be an enjoyable and informative community event.
