Social housing developments for Killybegs and Dunkineely have been welcomed by councillors in the Donegal municipal district.

At a special housing meeting of Donegal County Council today, councillors heard that there are a total of 1,805 social housing units either completed or in the delivery pipeline for the county.

There are 18 units in the planning and detailed design stage currently in the pipeline for the Old Fintra Road, Killybegs. Part 8 was advertised for public consultation on July 22, 2025. The Part 8 will be presented to Elected Members at the September 2025 Plenary Council Meeting on Monday 29 for decision.

A further 21 units are at pre-planning stage for Dunkineely. Part 8 advertised for public consultation on September 18, 2025. The Part 8 will be presented to elected members at the November 2025 Plenary Council Meeting for decision.

“I particularly welcome the Killybegs build, the 18 units there which will come before us at Monday's meeting,” said Cllr Niamh Kennedy. “It’s great to see progress on Dunkineely because it was an area that wasn’t even mentioned in quite a long time so to see those units to be proposed there is a great thing to see.”

“It’s great to see so many developments, especially in my own local MD in Donegal,” said Cllr Michael Boyle. “I especially would like to welcome developments in Killybegs and the 21 units in Dunkineely as well. These developments are vital for keeping the schools open, and I know Dunkineely schools and Killaghtee schools are under pressure with numbers so it’s great to see these coming on board hopefully.”

Cllr Boyle asked that the council contact Uisce Éireann regarding a sewerage issue at private residences adjacent to the Dunkineely development. He was informed by Mr Donal Walker that the matter would be up to the residents of the private dwellings, however the council may be able to assist.

Of the 1,805 social housing projects being delivered across the county, 282 social housing units have been completed. A further 588 social housing units are currently onsite.
