Donegal won the 1965 Dr McKenna Cup via a walkover.

Cavan refused to play on the original date for the final at the end of May. Donegal would not consent to a change of date. In June, a meeting of the Donegal County Board at the Butt Hall endorsed an executive decision to refuse a postponement.

The Donegal Democrat reported: ‘They considered it unreasonable. Cavan wanted the game off because they aid one of their players was in the USA, but so far as Donegal was concerned, they were prepared to play the final without two of their players.’

Cavan appealed, but did not then proceed when it was due for hearing and Donegal were awarded the cup.

Donegal (team v Down in semi-final): S Hoare; H Trevers, B Brady, JD McMenamin; A Carroll, PJ Flood, P Kelly; E Gallagher, F McFeely; M Griffin, S O’Donnell, J Hannigan; M McLoone, F Gallagher, P McShea.
