Man spared driving ban after 161km/h detection

A man has been allowed keep his licence after being apprehended driving at 161km/h in Donegal.

At 11.30pm on September 14, 2022, Gardai detected Liam Gillespie travelling at 161km/h in a 100km/h zone at Coolboy.

Sergeant Sean McDaid told the court that there was no traffic on the road at the time, but it was raining and the road was slightly damp.

Solicitor Mr Patsy Gallagher said Gillespie, a 40-year-old, comes home from London every 6-8 weeks.

“He had the car home for a family event,” Mr Gallagher said. “He was shown the speed gun and was apologetic.”

Reducing the charge from dangerous driving to one of careless driving, Judge Éiteáin Cunningham convicted Gillepsie and fined him €250. Judge Cunningham said she wouldn't disqualify Gillespie on this occasion, noting that he had no previous convictions.
