Discussions remain ongoing regarding the location of a new water sports facility in Downings.

It is almost two years now since Downings was confirmed as one of 22 sites across the country for the development of 'world class' water sports facilities.

At the time, the Minister for Tourism Catherine Martin and Fáilte Ireland announced a major investment worth €19million.

Downings was one of the locations earmarked where 'water-based activities are a key visitor attraction.'

Each centre was to provide hot showers, changing and toilet facilities, secure storage, induction spaces, equipment washdown and orientation points.

Donegal County Council says it is working with different sections of the local authority and Fáilte Ireland 'to fully understand the long term operation requirements'.

Officials are attempting to determine the best location for the proposed building 'to best meet the needs of the people of Downings'.

“The final location of the building is being discussed and it is hoped to agree the location soon.” the Council said in response to a question by Councillor John O'Donnell..

“Once the location and operation issues are addressed the council will commence work right away to prepare a planning application, possibly to An Board Pleanála, depending on the location with procurement of a consultant and contractor to follow.”

Tyhe Council says that, due to the amount of variables involved, it is too early to give a date for the commencement of construction.
