Donegal County council has applied for planning permission for a multi-purpose all-weather sports facility in Stranorlar.
The council has applied to An Board Pleanála for planning permission for the project to be located near the new Finn Harps stadium and the Finn Valley Centre.
The development includes the upgrading of and extension to an existing grass playing pitch to develop a synthetic multi-sport all-weather pitch with floodlighting, site and pitch fencing, ball stop netting, site drainage, landscaping, the forming of a flood-protection berm and provision of a perimeter grass walking and running track.
Funding of €1.2m has been secured from the Peace programme with additional funding to be provided by the council.
Local councillor Patrick McGowan has welcomed the application.
“The facilities will be open to a wide range of sports and will be in big demand when constructed which faced delays over the last two years due to covid and design issues,” he said.
“It will be a great addition to the sports facilities in the whole area and will be suitable for minority sports. Something of this size and nature will be very welcome and will be located in an area specially designated for sport and recreation.”
