Donegal ATU is leading out in making the North West region a hub for digital innovation and preparing students to shape the future of technology by embracing the potential of artificial intelligence (AI).

Speaking at the Asia Matters North West Business Summit in the Radisson Hotel, Letterkenny, the Minister of State for Sport and Postal Policy, Charlie McConalogue, says, said the Government is committed to ensuring the economy in the North West is positioned to benefit from emerging industries and new technologies.

“In the past, the North West economy was heavily dependent on primary production, with traditional manufacturing, agriculture and fishing very much to the fore,” he said.

“Today, the North West region is positioned to take its place in a future that will be built on the potential of new technologies, including the potential for new job opportunities offered by the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence across all business sectors and society.

“Donegal ATU is leading the way when it comes to AI, innovation, education and research. Through initiatives like DICE Labs and partnerships with global tech leaders, Donegal ATU is carving out a key role in AI’s development and application across various sectors.

“I commend the important work of the Asia Matters organisation in building dynamic business links to drive Ireland’s future with Asia. I am delighted to see you host this significant second Asia Matters North West Business Summit here in Donegal, joined by ambassadors from Australia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and the UAE and held in partnership with Atlantic Technological University and supported by Donegal County Council, Technology Ireland, Ibec, the Small Firms’ Association and Letterkenny Chamber. I congratulate you on the timeliness and importance of The Summit theme The Age of AI - Transforming the Future of Global Business.

Stating that links with Asia are more important now than ever for the future of Ireland, he continued: “As Ireland accelerates global trade diversification, Asia is the top priority. For Ireland, a small open European economy, building trusted and mutually beneficial partnerships with Asia is critical when it comes to diversifying trade, attracting investment, and enabling SMEs to thrive globally.

“AI is transforming the world across business and society. The Irish Government has appointed a Minister, my colleague Niamh Smyth, with specific responsibility for AI and digital transformation as Ireland seeks to accelerate the adoption of these rapidly evolving technologies so critical to driving the competitiveness of Irish businesses in international markets.

“The formation of the AI Advisory Council to provide independent expert advice to the government on artificial intelligence policy is proof of the government’s commitment to harnessing AI for economic growth.

“There are a lot of fears and concerns about the impact of AI on business, from employment, data protection and regulatory perspectives – the Irish government has designated 15 national competent authorities for oversight and enforcement of the EU AI ACT in Ireland. I see great potential for Ireland becoming a global AI hub, given the fact that we are the European home to many of the biggest technology companies in the world and the infrastructure and talent that surrounds it.

“We want to ensure our national policies continue to foster innovation, investment and long-term growth. This is becoming increasingly more important in the complex global economy we are experiencing.

“The recently published Action Plan on Competitiveness and Productivity sets out eight specific AI-related measures that will strengthen Ireland’s position. These efforts reflect our clear vision – which is to shape an Ireland where AI serves the common good, bolsters our economy, and does so in a way that is ethical, inclusive and sustainable.

“The theme of the summit today is on AI transforming global business with a clear focus on driving trade between Ireland, Asia and the Middle East. By continuing to invest in our people, support our businesses, and strengthen our research and innovation ecosystem, we can build an economy where AI drives productivity, creates quality jobs, and attracts global investment.”
