Works to improve the safety of Ballybofey pedestrian crossings will begin imminently.
The announcement was made at the recent Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District meeting that measures are set to be implemented to improve the safety and awareness of the pedestrian crossings in the twin town.
The Donegal County Council confirmed that funding has been secured to improve both long and short term features such as improved lighting, raised crossings and increased signage.
Dakota Nic Mheanman, a Sinn Féin election candidate for the Lifford-Stranorlar LEA, has welcomed the implementation of safer crossings highlighting that the work is required as concerns have been raised among the local community.
"I'm delighted to hear that work is to begin on several pedestrian crossings in the town and I know that the local community are also pleased that their concerns have been taken on board.
"These crossings are an accident waiting to happen. In my view, the crossings have been placed in the town without consultation with local people and the local business community.
"Since being selected to stand for the local elections by my party, the problems with the pedestrian crossings has been an issue that has been frequently brought to my attention.
"I raised the issues with my party colleagues and sitting councillors, Cllr Gary Doherty and Cllr Liam Doherty, and I'm now happy to see that short term measures to imrprove the crossings will begin and are to be completed in a number of weeks.
"Long term measures have also been discussed and I will strive to ensure that these are completed as quickly as possible as well."
