Tempers flare in the Super 8s encounter in Castlebar back in 2019
By 2015 Mayo had well and truly turned the tables on Donegal in terms of championship results
August 2015, Croke Park
All-Ireland quarter-final
Mayo 2-13:0-11 Donegal
Mayo ended Donegal's hopes of reaching a fourth All-Ireland semi-final berth in five years with a 2-13 to 0-11 win.
Goals from Aidan O'Shea and Lee Keegan either side of half time were crucial for the Connacht side in Croke Park.
Donegal - with Rory Gallagher now at the helm, had Michael Murphy in superb form as he kicked 0-8 of their total.
Mayo, who lost Kevin Keane to a straight red card in stoppage time, were fresher though after an easier route to the quarter-finals as injuries finally took their toll on Donegal who lost their Ulster crown to Tyrone.
Facing into a sixth tough championship encounter of the summer, Donegal were second best throughout and looked in trouble when they trailed by 0-7 to 0-4 after half an hour.
Two Murphy frees reduced the deficit to the minimum, but O'Shea's goal in the second minute of first-half injury time was a killer score.
Again, not much ‘ugliness’ in the sense that any of the exchanges were overzealous but it was fair to say, at this stage, that Mayo had well and truly turned the championship tide on Donegal. That was the cold, hard and even ugly truth.
