Donegal’s 0-19 to 1-15 win over Mayo confirmed second place in Group 1 of the All-Ireland SFC round-robin series.
Although Donegal and Tyrone finished level on four points apiece, with Donegal’s score difference better at +17 to +9, Malachy O’Rourke’s team won the head-to-head with their 2-17 to 0-20 victory in Ballybofey last month.
Tyrone were 0-31 to 1-18 victors over Cavan to confirm their top spot and they now go straight into the All-Ireland quarter-finals in two weeks’ time, with the other group winners Meath, Monaghan and Armagh.
Donegal, along with the other second-placed finishers - Kerry, Down and Dublin - will have home advantage in the All-Ireland preliminary quarter-finals this coming weekend against one of the third-placed finishers. Cavan, Cork, Louth and Galway will be on the road and teams cannot play sides they have met in the group stages, and there cannot be repeats of provincial finals.

That means that Donegal will welcome either Cork, Louth and Galway in the last 12 and should the side managed by Jim McGuinness come through that, they will be in the All-Ireland quarter-finals.
There, repeat group clashes and provincial final pairings are to be avoided, which means Donegal could not play Tyrone or Armagh, so, if they make it that far, they would be in line to meet either Monaghan or Meath. The draw for the All-Ireland SFC preliminary round takes place on RTÉ Radio One on Monday morning at 8:30am
