Robert Emmets grabbed their second win of the Junior A Championship campaign following a hard-fought victory over Urris in Emmet Park on Saturday evening.

Midfielder Sean Maguire scored the goal and also posted two points in the win over the men from Inishowen who are still chasing a first victory in the championship after three games.

Maguire’s midfield partner Jordan McKinney, who ran the show in the first half, also chipped in with five points, all but one from a free.

Conor Dalton and Paul Farrell were the other scorers for the locals who played a nice brand of  fast pace combination football and also left a number of scores behind them.

Luke Doherty, with four points, top-scored for Urris while Luke Mullins and John McCarron were also among the other point-getters.

Fullback Mullins scored the game’s only two-point score and was desperately unlucky not to post another. But referee Declan Callaghan ruled that the number three had one foot inside the 40m arc when he hit the ball.

Overall, this was a cracking game of football between two teams with contrasting styles. Robert Emmets, who are managed this season by former Aodh Ruadh and Donegal player John Duffy, played a fast moving short passing game.

Urris, on the other hand, played a more direct, long kicking game and against a well organised and sticky Robert Emmets defence, they were turned over in an attacking position quite a lot.

Robert Emmets midfielder McKinney was the standout player in the opening half hour. And with good support from his middle of the field partner Maguire, Conor and Rory Dalton, Conor McGettigan and Paul Farrell, Robert Emmets went in 1-5 to 0-2, in front at half time.

McKinney, Conor Dalton and Maguire kicked the Emmets points and it was McKinney’s long range strike that had all the appearances of a shot for a point that dropped short led to the game’s decisive goal.

After making a fabulous high catch, Urris goalkeeper Jonny Noone overstretched and falling back, he dropped the ball and the inrushing Maguire first timed it to the back of the net.

That was at midway point in the opening half and opened up a 1-2 to 0-1 Robert Emmets lead.

John McCarron on five minutes, the game’s opening score and Luke Doherty from a close in free on 23 minutes kicked Urris’ other first half point.

The locals got the second half off to a lively start with three quick points courtesy of McKinney, Maguire and Paul Farrell to one in response from Luke Doherty.

Robert Emmets’ lead was now out to six points 1-8 to 0-3.

And the advantage was out to eight at 1-10 to 0-5 by the midway point in the second half before Urris with Luke Mullins, John McCarron, Lorcan McMonagle stepping up with a late spurt, outscored the locals by three points to one.

The Inishowen men were also denied a late goal by the out-stretched leg of Sam McGlinchey after  Pearse McCarron let fly as the ball came back off the upright.
