Gary Wilson much happier with MacCumhaills’ game management in Ardara

Gary Wilson was content to see his MacCumhaills side move onto five points from a possible six and he was particularly pleased with the ruthlessness they displayed in disposing of Ardara.

The Twin Towns outfit were almost reeled in from 12 points up first day out against St Michael’s at the Bridge and last weekend allowed Glenswilly off the hook having enjoyed a 13-point lead at one stage.

However, they were much more clinical in Ardara on Saturday night as they earned a 2-22 to 1-13 victory over their hosts.

Damian Deveney’s side came into Round 3 of the SFC with tails up having downed Aodh Ruadh on their own patch and given Naomh Conaill a real scare in Glenties last weekend.

But with the likes of Oisin Gallen, Jamie Keegan and Kevin McCormick running riot in Pearse Memorial Park, MacCumhaills were most impressive in victory.

“Overall, we’re delighted to get the result more than anything,” said Wilson. “Two points is two points in the grand scheme of things.

“We probably should have been sitting on four points coming up to Ardara and we were sort of kicking ourselves we weren’t.

“We maybe lacked a wee bit of composure at certain times in St Michael’s and, of course, the last day against Glenswilly. So we focused heavily on our game management ahead of Ardara.

“And I think we have to be aware that a lot of our experienced players, Oisin Gallen and Martin O’Reilly in particular, they are higher up the pitch inside.

“So we are asking a lot of the likes of Sean Martin, Conor Griffin and Fionn McNulty, lads not over 20 yet, to show cool heads and lead that out.

“But I thought they showed this evening they can do that. There are times you have to go for the jugular and times you need to look to take the sting out of it. And tonight was much better in that regard”.
