Glenfin 1-11

A late goal put a better gloss on the scoreboard for Glenfin as Four Masters coasted to a second win in the Donegal senior championship in Tirconaill Park on Sunday evening.

The home side took control after Shaun Ward opened the scoring for the visitors and were never headed after that and they should have added a couple of goals to their final tally. After losing last time out away in Termon, this was a big game for them and they showed up well.

Glenfin, on the other hand, are struggling to make any impact in the championship and they will now have to pin their hopes on a final day at home to Ardara.

Alex McCalmont was the scoring star for the winners in the opening half, hitting five of their first seven points, one of them a two pointer. A number of his colleagues were a bit shot shy, although you couldn’t say that about Conor McCahill, who hit one great point with his right but then went for goal when a point might have been a better option.

A Luke McGlynn two pointer for Glenfin had the sides level at 0-3 each on eight minutes before Kevin Muldoon and Shaun Ward (free) left it 0-4 each. Four Masters pulled away in the second quarter with Muldoon hitting a two pointer and McCalmont also adding to his tally.

Odhran O’Connor had a lone Glenfin point to leave it 0-10 to 0-5 at the break. McCahill and Killian Faulkner added points for Four Masters at the start of the second half but Shaun Ward with a free and a two point free momentarily cut the lead to four.

But then Four Masters pulled away with Richard O’Rourke, McCahill (free), Callum McCrea, McCalmont, Turlough Carr (free) and Caolan Loughney stretching the lead to 0-10 to 0-8 by the 56th minute. Patrick Reid almost scored a spectacular goal as his effort beat the stranded Glenfin ‘keeper but came back off a post and Alex McCalmont was denied a goal by a great save by Andrew Walsh.

Shaun Ward had three late points for Glenfin and Karl McGlynn fired home a good goal while Turlough Carr kept the Four Masters scoreboard ticking with two points, but at that stage the game was over as a contest.
