Top guns Termon and Glenfin are fancied to meet once more in the Donegal LGFA Senior Championship final ahead of this weekend’s pair of last four clashes.
Moville and St Naul’s are the challengers this Sunday, with Moville being the last team to break the so-called big two’s grip on the championship back in 2016.
Dungloe and Donegal legend Tony Boyle, now boss at his own home town club, helps DonegalLive run the rule over both contests.
“I know Moville and St Naul’s have made great strides in the last few seasons.
“But it is still hard to look past Termon and Glenfin and all that experience and know-how.
“They are the two strongest teams in the championship, though I do think the gap between them and the rest of us is getting narrower.
“We beat Termon in the county Gaeltacht final and they only beat us by a point a couple of weeks ago in the championship.
“And in the last round of the championship, they only beat Moville by a point to take the top spot in the group. So nothing is as certain as it maybe once was."
Termon vs. St Naul’s
Sunday, Lifford, 10.30am
“St Naul’s are a good side but they are very young. The bulk of the team are still minors and they have a very good minor team.
“In fact, St Naul’s minors played Glenswilly on Tuesday evening in the quarter-final of the championship, five days out from a senior semi-final, which is not ideal.
“They have Lucy Ward, a former county minor and they have Florence Naughton and they have the Greene sisters. They are all very good players.
“But I feel especially against an experienced team like Termon, this semi-final has come a couple of years too soon for St Naul’s.
Geraldine McLaughlin is a huge loss for Termon, but they still have a lot of quality and experience in Emer Gallagher (Friel), Nicole McLaughlin, Jodie McFadden and Ciara McGarvey, all either current or ex-county players. I feel they will have too much for St Naul’s.
Verdict: Termon
Glenfin vs. Moville
Sunday, Burt, 10.30am
“I get the impression that Glenfin mean business this year.
“Yvonne Bonner is still there and they have other experienced campaigners in Karen Guthrie and Katy Herron still involved.
“They are all quality players and they also have Katie Long, a former county senior and Abbie McGranaghan from Robert Emmets has joined them this season.
“The one concern for Glenfin is that their road so far has been marked with big wins over Naomh Muire, St Naul’s and Naomh Conaill and they have not been really tested. They certainly were in the weaker group.
“Moville have beaten Dungloe, St Eunan’s and Aodh Ruadh and ran Termon to a point in the last group game. They have definitely come through the stronger section.
“Former county player Niamh Hegarty is still a big player for them and they also have her sister Tara and Blaithnaid McLaughlin.
“I know we were short a couple of players the day they beat us. But it was still a good result to come to Dungloe and go away with the win. They will provide Glenfin with a stern test.
Verdict: Glenfin
