Naomh Columba ladies celebrate their Junior championship win
Niamh Ní Bhaoill was the star of the show as Naomh Columba overcame Urris to win the Donegal LGFA Junior ‘A’ Championship on Sunday afternoon for the first time in the club's history.
The Naomh Columba centre scored 2-9 in the 3-13 to 2-15 win over Urris in a high-quality and highly competitive junior final played before a big crowd in Pairc McDiarmada, Lifford.
“It is not about me and who scored the goals and the most points. It is all about all the girls and the whole team and squad,” the free-scoring Naomh Columba number 11 modestly insisted afterwards.
“They all worked extremely hard the whole game, and they had to because Urris really put it up to us.
“We were sweating for a while in the extra-time. They went three up after they scored their second goal. But we did not panic, and I scored the goal to draw us level again.
“It is a great achievement, and I’m so proud of the girls and the whole team management and coaches and those in the management team. They all played their part in the win.
“We fought to the end, and we felt we deserved to win and to bring the cup back to Glen.
“We really had to dig deep, and it just goes to show how well the two teams are matched.
“It was touch and go from the start. We would get a score, and then they would score.”
Naomh Columba played into a stiff breeze in the first half but still led by two points, 1-7 to 1-5 at the break, courtesy of a goal and five points from Ní Bhaoill, along with two wonderful Clár Ní Bheirn points.

The goal came on the brink of half-time when a 35 metre Ní Bhaoill free dropped just under the crossbar, and the Urris goalkeeper, in an attempt to catch the ball, stepped back across the line.
It edged Naomh Columba ahead 1-6 to 1-5 after being five points down ten minutes earlier. Sharpshooter Ní Bhaoill added her fifth point of the half shortly after from a close-in free for the two point half-time advantage.
“We went into the second half in a positive frame of mind. And we knew we had to make sure that we matched them score for score because we always knew they were going to come back at us.
“We were sweating for a while in the second half when they went three up near the end of the game. But we did not panic and just knuckled down, and I got the third goal to draw level. And that is how it worked out, and they scored a late point to draw the game and force the extra-time.”
