Gaoth Dobhair roots inspiring Ballyboden star Daire Sweeney’s Dublin SFC title bid

Daire Sweeney hit 2-8 for Ballyboden in their Dublin SFC semi-final win

Daire Sweeney is aiming to make up for Gaoth Dobhair’s Donegal SFC disappointment by helping fire Ballyboden St Enda’s to the Dublin title this weekend.

Sweeney, whose dad Maurice hails from Bunbeg, was in Letterkenny last Sunday as Naomh Conaill edged out Gaoth Dobhair, after extra-time, to lift the Dr Maguire.

The week previously, Sweeney was sensational as Ballyboden ended Cula’s run as Dublin champions, notching 2-8, in a 3-21 to 2-22 semi-final win in Parnell Park.

Na Fianna got the better of 2023 All-Ireland winners Kilmacud Crokes in the other last-four clash there and provide the opposition in Saturday’s Dublin decider.

Sweeney's brilliant haul helped Ballyboden come from seven points down with just five minutes of normal time remaining and win by two.

As a child, he spent most summers back in Bunbeg and even attended Cúl Camps in Magheragallon. More recently, he's togged for the 'Singles' against the 'Married' in Gaoth Dobhair's annual St Stephen's Day charity kickabout.

There is also a strong Donegal connection on the Ballboden sideline with boss Eamon O’Reilly a first cousin of former Donegal star Marty O’Reilly.
