Four Masters captain Conor Reid celebrates with his teammates Pic Matthew Harvey
Conor Reid lifted the JP Cunningham Cup on Sunday in Fr Tierney Park, Ballyshannon after his Four Masters side ran out comprehensive winners of Naomh Conaill in the U-21A decider. The Donegal Town side added 1-9 in the final quarter for a 17 point win.
“It’s lovely to win and to be captain and lead them boys out there is a big honour. Any of that team could be captain,” said a beaming Conor Reid as he savoured another medal with Four Masters in Fr Tierney Park, Ballyshannon.
Reid was captain for the second year in-a-row, having led the team to victory over Glenswilly last year. This time the margin against Naomh Conaill was bigger but the satisfaction was just the same.
“Everyone is a leader and I have the honour to call myself captain,” said Reid.
With the wind at their backs Naomh Conaill got the dream start with a goal from Danny Brown on 45 seconds, but by half-time Four Masters had turned it around to lead 1-10 to 1-4 and in truth they were never in any trouble thereafter.
“I think it really clicked for us in the second half. That goal at the start of the game kinda kicked us into gear. We weren’t expecting it. But we knew coming here against Glenties, one of the best teams of the last 10, 15 years in this county, nothing was going to be easy. Look, the scoreline looks different to what the game was. It kinda opened out for us near the end,” said Reid.
“Yeah, it was a good team performance overall and I would think every man would be happy this evening with how we played.”
The overall team performance was impressive and it was a difficult decision to pick a man of the match. Seanán Carr got the award but Callum McCrea must have been close also for his overall performance.
“Listen, Callum does unbelievable work for you, down the pitch, up the pitch. We’re so lucky to have a player like Callum, who does such work. He mightn’t be on the scoresheet every week, but we never underestimate him or take him for granted,” said Reid, who said that all the boys on the pitch work so hard.
The captain said they would have a good evening with all 43 of the panel heading for a meal in Donegal Town.
It is just phenomenal the winning mentality in the Four Masters club right now and it shows no sign of ending any time soon.
