Mark McHugh sealed his first title as Westmeath manager after they defeated Kildare by two points in the O’Byrne Cup Final on Friday night in Newbridge.
Kilcar native McHugh watched his Westmeath side win an eventful game by 1-18 to 1-16.
Westmeath were four points down at 0-8 to 0-4 at the interval, and went eight points behind soon after at 1-13 to 0-8.
But a goal from Ronan Wallace, who hit 1-7 in total, gave them hope, and they continued to pull back the deficit going into the closing stages.

They drew level late on and a super two-pointer from Luke Loughlin in added time ensured the win.
McHugh is in his first year in charge of Westmeath after being part of the coaching staff last year.
Westmeath are in Division 3 of the National League and begin their campaign next weekend against Sligo.
