Gary McDaid has joined Austin O’Malley’s backroom team with Slaughtneil in Derry.

McDaid returned to the position two years ago and his side lost out to Four Masters 2-15 to 0-18 in last year's Donegal SFC preliminary quarter-final.

He also has intercounty experience, both as part of Rory Gallagher’s senior Donegal backroom team back in 2015 as well as bossing the Donegal U-20s in 2018 and ‘19.

McDaid will act as coach to O’Malley at the Oak Leaf outfit.

The Mayo native previously guided Dublin's Cuala to a historic All-Ireland club SFC success at Errigal Ciarán's expense.

As a player, O'Malley represented both Mayo and Wicklow at inter-county level before returning to his native Louisburg and winning Mayo and Connacht junior club honours.

Slaughtneil won five Derry SFC titles between 2014 and 2020 before losing finals to Glen in 2021 and 2022.
