Shaun Patton returns to Donegal training and 'going well' ahead of Ulster SFC

Goalkeeper Shaun Patton took a full part in Donegal's pre-Championship training camp in Portugal

Shaun Patton is “in contention” for Donegal’s Ulster SFC quarter-final against Down.

The St Eunan’s goalkeeper has not played this calendar year and underwent an operation on his foot in the new year.

Gavin Mulreany from St Naul’s lined out between the sticks for Donegal in the Dr McKenna Cup and the National Football League Division 1 - with the side managed by Jim McGuinness winning both competitions - with Padraig Mac Giolla Bhride from Gaoth Dobhair making a late cameo appearance against Monaghan.

Donegal have returned from a pre-Championship training camp at the high-performance facilities in the Algarve’s The Campus at Quinta do Lago in Portugal and McGuinness said that Patton took a full part.

“The injuries are clearing up for us at the right time,” McGuinness said. “We had most of the fellas on the pitch. Shaun is back, going well, thank God, and got the full camp under his belt so that’s a big, big plus. He’ll be in contention for the Down game.”

McGuinness also said that Daire Ó Baoill, Ciaran Moore and Oisin Gallen are back to fitness and that Ciaran Thompson, who suffered a torn ACL in the All-Ireland final loss to Kerry last July is making positive progress.

Gaoth Dobhair’s Ó Baoill has been missing since Donegal’s win over Kerry in Ballyshannon in early March due to a hand injury, St Eunan’s Moore missed the latter stages of the league with a “soft-tissue injury” and MacCumhaill’s Gallen was said to have a “niggle” in recent weeks after missing the bulk of the club championship last year with a quad injury..

“Ciaran is doing very well, although Down will be too early for him,” McGuinness said of his Naomh Conaill clubman. “Daire, Ciaran and Oisin are back fit so a lot of the fellas that were there or thereabouts in terms of injuries, they’ve all tidied up and we’re getting close to a full compliment again.”

Donegal take on Down on Sunday, April 26, at 3pm at O’Donnell Park in Letterkenny.
