Donegal manager Luke Barrett acknowledged that Tyrone, who were missing some key players, might be a different proposition later in the year but was more than happy to concentrate on his own team following victory in the Ulster Minor League

Donegal team manager Luke Barrett said he was pleased with the overall effort of his charges in their first competitive match of the season, as they overcame Tyrone 0-12 to 0-10 in the Ulster Minor League.

And, while Tyrone was missing a few regulars, so too was Barrett as he reflected on a well- deserved win.
“We are happy enough, coming into the game we were unsure where we were at as we did not have too many challenge games and we are missing a few players,” he said.

“Any team you beat is a good result and Tyrone are the bench- mark and they are the Ulster champions and they also still have the likes of Conor Devlin who played today. Ruairi McCullagh has to come back but we are concentrating on ourselves.
“We have a fairly strong spine up the middle and we are building from there and they are still coming through and you see how the S and C works, but I still think Tyrone are just ahead of us in this sphere. All we can do is keep working”.

Donegal dominated for long periods but needed to hold off a late charge from Tyrone to secure the win at the Donegal GAA Centre in Convoy.

“They only scored two points from play, but we conceded 10 scorable frees from inside our own half and we would not be happy about that,” Barrett added. “We need to work on how to defend and that would be punished against quality opposition. We have good scoring potential, and they are all keen to play for Donegal and have a great attitude and it makes our job easy.

“I was really happy with the level of commitment. We felt at half time that we needed to see this one out and that is exactly what we did and I am happy about that. Tyrone did keep coming but we dominated midfield in those final moments, and I was happy with the way we held on but not with the way we gave up some turnovers. But this was a good day for us, and we now play Fermanagh next week”.
