Some of the county’s biggest ever GAA legends were out in force this afternoon in Fintra to take part in a fundraising match in aid of Killybegs native and popular GAA coach Joe McBrearty.

Joe has helped develop footballers from every corner of Donegal and so many of those same players were in attendance today as a Donegal select defeated a South West select 5-11 to 1-12.

Unfortunately, Joe was recently forced to step away from coaching, and his employment, as he is currently undergoing cancer treatment in Dublin.

Speaking to Donegal Live after, Michael Murphy paid tribute to Joe’s contribution to football in Donegal. And the 2012 All-Ireland winner is backing Joe to be back coaching on the sidelines sooner rather than later.

“I would have been coached by Joe from very early on,” said Michael. “Summer Camps - Joe was an ever present when I was growing up. He was always very innovative and fun with how he set things up. Underage Donegal games, he was in so many of those setups as well as Vocational School level.

“A great bunch of Killybegs lads came through the ranks under him as well. Donegal lads in Dublin, he looked after training there for so long. We stay in touch to this day. He’s so clued into trends and modern ways of going about it.

“He’s got a big battle now but please god he comes out the other end of that. The brilliant attendance here today from Killybegs and around the county just shows how high an esteem he's held in”.
