Donegal began their Ulster Minor Football Championship group campaign tonight (Wednesday) against Fermanagh in Ballybofey.

In a hectic schedule, Donegal then go away to Down on Sunday, in the curtain-raiser to the senior championship meeting in Pairc Esler.

They subsequently face Derry, at home, in Ballybofey, on Saturday week and they are away to Monaghan, seven days later on May 6.

Donegal go into the championship on the back of a good Ulster Minor League campaign with a final win over a highly fancied Derry already in the bag.

The defeated the Oak Leaf county after coming from five points down in the second half to win with a goal to spare.

“We are not suggesting by any stretch of the imagination we are Kerry or Dublin but they are an unbelievably committed bunch of players,” Barrett said after the minor league final”.

Group B of the Electric Ireland Ulster Minor Football Championship is made up of Antrim, Armagh, Cavan and Tyrone.

Barrett explained: “The championship is structured with two groups, a four and a five. We’re in the group of five. Only one side across the board there will go out after all of that. There is a good chance winning one game will get you into the quarter-final. And we hope there will be a chance there as well to give fellas opportunities.

“But where you finish will determine your seeding come the quarter-finals. It’s a strange system as regardless of the results, one side in our section will go out, even if they do pick up a point or two. All four sides in Section B are already guaranteed to progress, even if they finish on no points”.
