After losing all seven games in the Lidl NFL Ladies Division One and relegation, Donegal manager Maxi Curran was naturally delighted to get the win over Cavan in his side’s championship opener.
Karen Guthrie was back on board for the first time this season and scored 1-4 in the 1-6 to 0-4 win at Breffni Park.
“It is great to get three points on the board,” Curran said. “It has been a long time coming. But it is good to get the win. Cavan started well and they kicked three fabulous points. But they were all scored in the first 10 minutes of the game and they only scored one more point for the rest of the game. We struggled to get scores on the board.
“But the wind died completely at half-time. We played against the wind in the first half and there was no wind to help us in the second half. And I suppose as the old saying goes there is no substitute for class and Karen showed her class and kicked the scores at the other end to make the difference. She ended the game with a goal and four points and is just sheer class.”
