Downings face a battle against Termon, according to manager Kevin 'Cookie' Gallagher, inset
Downings are aiming to build on a competent start in the Donegal IFC when they take on Termon this evening at the Burn Road in the second set of fixtures.
Kevin ‘Cookie’ Gallagher saw his team produce a 3-6 to 0-10 win over Bundoran at home last weekend, having come back from a five-point deficit with Paddy McElwee scoring 2-2. Termon, for their part, started off well too, beating Naomh Bríd 2-12 to 1-8 on the road.
“It is going to be another battle, Gallagher said. “Termon are a very good side. We know a good bit about them. It is all on the day and whoever wants to win the most. Termon has match winners up the top end of the field too.”
Gallagher will conduct the media responsibilities for his side, who are not doing any pre or post-match interviews.
“It is no disrespect to the press,” insisted the manager. “They just said they did want to talk to the media and that they wanted to do their talking out on the field. If that is what they want ,we have to go with it.”
Downings won Division 2 in the Donegal All-County Football League last season and they acquitted themselves well in Division 1 this term and, like Termon, are among the favourites for this year’s IFC.
Gallagher said he would have settled for a one-point win over Bundoran in windy conditions in Pairc Na Dunaibh.
"We knew it was going to be a battle today against Bundoran,” he said afterward last Sunday. “The elements did neither side favours. The old myth that we are used to playing in windy conditions but that doesn’t wash with me.
“I thought we were very wasteful in the first half. Three or four of their eight points came from turnovers and that is not good enough going forward and it is something we are going to have to get to grips with.
“When we got them in at half-time and rejigged things and we felt confident we could pull it back. We always believe in our ability if we work hard and keep possession of the ball and we work it up to our shooters we know what they are capable of.”
