Joseph McGill's commitment to Convoy's cause goes above and beyond.
Joseph McGill has flown home from London for the last four weekends to help St Mary’s, Convoy chase their Junior A football championship dream.
And it has been four out of four for the gifted full-forward who senses that this could well be a special year for his club.
On Saturday, he was once again very much to the fore in a most impressive victory, hitting 1-3 in a great first half as his team easily accounted for Naomh Ultan.
Speaking after his side’s routine 3-17 to 1-9 win over their Dunkineely counterparts, he said: “We were not expecting to win by as much as we did.
“We won all our games and they won all theirs right up to this so we are just happy to top the group, get a week off and prepare now for the semi-finals.”
McGill works in construction in London but that has not stopped him from commuting home weekly for the cause of the club.
“Yes, I am working in construction and this is my fourth weekend to come home on the trot and I will be coming home next weekend for the training as well.
“I lined out with London earlier this year and that was a very good experience. But I saw an opportunity here to kick on with the boys and win a county title.
“That is what I have been coming home for and it has been a case of so far, so good.
“I was playing with North London Shamrocks for a while, but it has always been a big thing for me to come home and play with these boys - the boys I grew up with and we are going in the right direction.
“A few young lads came on board and hopefully we can continue in the right direction”.
McGill agreed that his team’s physicality in central areas is a huge plus.
“I suppose we are big and strong around central areas and that is always a help, but we are pretty mobile too and Laurence McMullan has us all in good shape.’
And McGill paid a big tribute to his team-mate Paddy Dolan, who hit a brilliant 0-8 over the hour.
“Paddy has always been a class act and he is finding form at the right time. He is a massive player for us and when he is playing like that no team could cope with him.
“Paddy is 24 now and he is in his prime, and if he keeps going in the right direction, God knows what could happen. He is definitely county standard”.
