Kennedy edges out McLaughlin in AFLW finals as Swans advance to last four

Tanya Kennedy and Niamh McLaughlin hug it out after this morning's AFLW finals clash as the Sydney Swans defeated the Gold Coast Suns

In the All-Donegal AFLW Finals clash on Saturday morning it was Tanya Kennedy and the Sydney Swans that came out on top, 58-41, against Niamh McLaughlin and the Gold Coast Suns.

The Swans set up victory with a blistering four-goal opening quarter and despite repeated efforts by the Suns to get back into the match, were never truly troubled in the 17-point win.

In a storming 80 minutes of football, Kennedy had 10 tackles, keeping the usual red-hot Claudia Whitfort to just 14 disposals. The Castlefin native not only put the clamps on Whitfort, but managed 22 touches of her own.

Moville dynamo McLaughlin dug as deep as anyone for the Suns but they just couldn’t recover from that early four-goal concession.

Next up for Kennedy is another tangle with a Donegal teammate as Yvonne Bonner and the Adelaide Crows now stand between Sydney and a place in the AFLW preliminary decider.

For McLaughlin and the Suns, it's the end of the road, but a first season in the AFLW that she can be really proud of after winning six games and drawing one during the home and away season.
