Glenswilly booked their place in the Donegal U21A final with a five point win over Termon at a wet and windy Donegal Training Centre in Convoy this afternoon.
Glenswilly 1- 10 Termon 0-8
Kealan Dunleavy kicked seven points (three from frees, two from marks) for the winners with an almost faultless performance in front of the Termon goal.
And lively corner Emmet O’Boyle scored the crucial Glenswilly goal while Sean Collum and Jack Gallagher were also among the scorers for the Aidy Glackin managed side.
Apart from a brief period at the start of the game and again in the opening minutes of the second period, they were no way flattered by the winning margin at the end.
Termon, last year’s beaten finalists, got off to a bright start and with Jamie Grant pressing from wing-back the men from the Burn road raced into an early 0-3 to 0-0 lead.
Oisin Harkin, John James Sweeney and Mark Gallagher all whipped over points inside the opening seven minutes.
But Glenswilly, who were last in an U-21 A final back in 2004, hung in during those early exchanges and with Jack Gallagher and Dunleavy stepping up the boys from Pairc Naomh Columba grew into the game,
Dunleavy started in the front line of the attack in the absence of young Daithi Gildea, Glenswilly leading scorer in the championship to date. Lst year’s minor star sat out the game with an injury.
And it was Dunleavy, who had a number of outings with Donegal seniors in the early part of the last season, who opened the Glenswilly account 12 minutes into the game.
He then proceeded to kick four of his team’s next four points - two of them from marks - as Glenswilly rattled off five unanswered points in a ten minute spell to lead 0-5 to 0-3, by the 22nd minute mark.
Jack Gallagher curled over the other Glenswilly point.
Big Bobby McGettigan, who was well marshalled by Mikey Toner, scored Termon’s first point in 17 minutes shortly after to cut the lead to a single point.
And John James Sweeney, who had a fine game at wing forward, and Ciaran Cassidy posted late points for Termon to one more of the half from Dunleavy to leave the sides deadlocked at 0-6 each at the changeover.
Termon again began the second half well and Kevin McGettigan and Oisin Harkin raised early white flags for a two point lead.
Termon were back in dominant mode with Jamie Grant, Bobby McGettigan and John James Sweeney leading the charge.
John Quinn pulled off a brilliant save at the near post to deny Ciaran Cassidy, the game's first green flag.
Bobby McGettigan was wide from the subsequent ‘45’ and Emmet Maguire did well to deflect a Gerard Shields goal bound effort for a ‘45’ at the other end.
With Termon two up they looked to be in a good place.
But the game turned on the three-quarter mark with an Emmet O’ Boyle goal for a three point swing. Glenswilly now led 1-7 to 0-8 with a quarter of an hour of normal time to play.
O’Boyle did well when sent through by Jack Gallagher to hit the top right corner of Maguire’s net.
And when Dunleavy followed up with a pointed free shortly after Glenswilly were three in front for the first time.
Termon were now down to 14 after John James Sweeney picked up a black card. And when Sean Collum powered through from midfield for two quick points to sink the dagger Glenswilly were on their way.
They will now face reigning champions Gaoth Dobhair in next weekend’s final.
