Greg Doherty, inset, and Four Masters celebrate.
It’s been a difficult number of weeks for Four Masters joint boss Greg Doherty following the passing of his mother, the late Anne Doherty.
However, he’s paid the club’s minor heroes the ultimate complement, explaining that their Ulster heroics proved to be the most welcome of distractions, culminating in a 1-10 to 2-4 victory over Cavan Gaels in the decider.
“People say it all the time when they lose someone, that football is a great distraction. And when my mum passed away, her funeral was on the Saturday and we’d training the next day, Sunday.
“It just meant you’d to get on with it, refocus. And that’s what she’d have wanted. It was a tough few weeks for both myself and Oisin.
“But she would love this - both herself and my dad”.
On the feat that the Donegal Town club has achieved, he said: “We’re delighted. The boys dug really deep there in the second-half. We’ve had the lads since they were underage. Looking back, they were just boys.
“To see them growing into men and what they achieving, they are a credit to themselves and their families. The humility and respect they have even in victory, we couldn’t be more proud of them”.
