MacCumhaills will celebrate the life and career of the legendary Bernard Laverty
Sean MacCumhaills will honour one of the club’s real legends at their upcoming dinner dance and awards night, to be held on Saturday, January 20.
This year the Twin Towns outfit will celebrate the life of Bernard Laverty, who died on June 16, 2023.
Bernard represented Sean MacCumhaill’s for many years throughout the ‘golden period’ of the 1960s and was a midfielder playing alongside his brothers who all represented the club as well as his sisters who played camogie.
Bernard was part of the Sean MacCumhaills team that won the Donegal SFC title in both 1962 and 1964.
As well as the enduring impact Bernard has had on the Sean MacCumhaills Club, Bernard was also one of the founding members of the London Tir Chonaill Gaels club in 1962.
Tir Chonaill Gaels is one of the oldest clubs outside Ireland and one of the most successful in London GAA with players having represented London at intecounty level.
The first London Tir Chonaill Gaels team played its first game on February 17th 1963 in Blackheath in a friendly against Du Hollow GFC.
Gaels went on to win the Junior championship and league in 1963, then winning the intermediate championship and league in the 70s, as well as claiming the Sean Shiels and Murphy Cups.
The club continued to strengthen and won its first Senior London Championship in 1983, as well as winning the All-Britain Championship. Since then the club has won eight London and British Senior Championships respectively.
As a result of Bernard and the other founding members' foresight, Tir Chonaill Gaels continues to be a community focal point for the Irish diaspora kept alive by dedicated members who continue to ensure that this unique aspect of our culture is passed on to the next generation
In later years Bernard is remembered as a club stalwart with a regular presence in the main stand of MacCumhaill Park supporting both his club and grandchildren.
