Shane O'Donnell in action for DCU

Shane O'Donnell, the standout player from St Eunan's, showcased his prowess with four points, propelling DCU into the quarter-final of the Sigerson Cup with a convincing 0-22 to 0-8 victory over TUS Midlands on Wednesday evening.

Following lackluster performances earlier in the Sigerson Cup, DCU exhibited a remarkable turnaround in Athlone, with O'Donnell delivering an outstanding performance.

Jamie Grant from Termon, starting at corner-back, also played a crucial role in securing DCU's victory.

Notably, O'Donnell and Ryan Donohoe emerged as pivotal figures during the initial exchanges, jointly contributing five points in the opening quarter. This stellar effort allowed DCU to establish a commanding lead of 0-6 to 0-1.

Defensively, the north Dublin college maintained absolute control, thwarting TUS Midlands' attempts, despite their possession advantage. The Midlanders struggled to create meaningful scoring opportunities, compounded by a series of missed frees that further demoralised their efforts. By half-time, Joseph Hagan from Longford had notched up two of his four points, and DCU led comfortably at 0-12 to 0-1.

The second half witnessed DCU continuing their scoring prowess, with 10 different players contributing from play. Although Jake Shiels displayed commendable goalkeeping skills for the Midlanders, which denied DCU from landing any goals.

Looking ahead, the north Dublin university is set to face the University of Limerick in the upcoming quarter-final, building on the momentum gained from this impressive win.

Elsewhere, Ronan McGeehin of St Eunan’s was in goal for Ulster University as they defeated MTU Cork by 1-16 to 2-7 and will now take on TU Dublin in the last eight next week.
