DCU Dóchas Éireann came out on top in the Freshers semi-final against Ulster University at Jordanstown this evening on a scoreline of 1-11 to 0-9. The game had been postponed from last Thursday evening.
The Dublin college had two well-known Donegal players in their line up with Conor Reid from Four Masters at centre-forward and Shaun Ward of Glenfin at corner-forward.
The Dublin side played against a strong wind in the first half and turned around on level terms at 0-6 each. Conor Reid had to go off at half-time after picking up an ankle injury.
His Donegal teammate, however, was one of the stars for the winning side, hitting three points, two of them frees from outside the '45'.
With the sides level at 0-9 each, a goal from Ryan Sinkey put clear water between the sides in the last 10 minutes. Karl Joseph Molloy hit two points for the losers. The Belfast side will rue poor shooting with 16 wides to DCU’s 5.
The University of Ulster team also had a big Donegal connection with Eoghan Kelly (Aodh Ruadh), Karl Joseph Molloy (Ardara) and Ryan Barrett (Realt na Mara, Bundoran) in the starting line up while Max Roarty (St Michael's), Aaron Cullen (Aodh Ruadh), Eoin McGonigle, MacCumhaills and Adam McGeever, Gaoth Dobhair are in the panel.
And the side is managed by former Aodh Ruadh player, Anthony McGrath.
The starting DCU team was: William Foley (Horeswood, Wexford); Conor Smith (Clonguish, Longford), Ronan Geoghegan (Skerries Harps, Dublin), Liam Corbett (Ratoath, Meath); Dylan Cooke Leonard (Naomh Eanna, Wexford), Evan Crowe (Ballyhaise, Cavan), Cian Lynch (Glenflesk, Kerry); Dylan Clarke (Castleknock, Dublin), Jack Kinlough (St Peter, Dunboyne, Meath); Eoin Ward (Fuerty, Roscommon), Conor Reid (Four Masters, Donegal), Matthew Flynn (Clonguish, Longford); Shaun Ward (Glenfin, Donegal), Liam Flynn (Mattock Rangers, Lough), Ryan Sinkey (Naas, Kildare).
Among the backroom team for DCU are Nathan Gavigan, MacCumhaill's and Michael Blaney, Gaeil Fhánada and Rory Craig.
DCU will now meet University of Galway in the final with date and venue to be decided
