The Abbey Vocational School in Donegal Town will play their All-Ireland ‘B’ colleges semi-final against Ashbourne Community School this Saturday at 2pm in St Tiernach’s Park, Clones, it has been confirmed.

The Donegal Town school are into their first ever Paddy Drummond Cup final after a fairly comfortable semi-final win over Dunmore CS in Kent Park, Sligo, two weeks ago.

The senior boys are looking to become just the third Donegal school to win the prestigious All-Ireland trophy after St Eunan’s College, Letterkenny, and De La Salle, Ballyshannon did it back in 1979 and 1980 respectively.

Those two winning teams included four players who would go on and win Donegal’s first All-Ireland senior title in 1992 with Charlie Mulgrew, Paul Carr, Matt Gallagher and Brian Murray all winning Celtic Cross medals for Brian McEniff’s side.

The Abbey Vocational School team is managed by Stuart McFadden and Donegal star Jamie Brennan and won their first MacLarnon Cup just under a month ago in the Athletic Grounds with a 2-10 to 0-8 point victory over Our Lady & St Patrick’s, Knock.

In doing so they became just the fourth school to win the trophy from Donegal.

Backboned by a dozen players from the Ulster minor winning Four Masters side, the Tir Chonaill team were warm favourites for the silverware that day, and they didn’t disappoint, and will now hope to add one more piece of silverware to their trophy cabinet this weekend.
