Just over two months after winning an Ulster club minor medal with Four Masters, Turlough Carr was to the fore once more as he played a huge part in the Abbey Vocational School, Donegal Town, winning an All-Ireland Colleges title.

Speaking on the St Tiernach’s Park, Clones pitch just minutes after his school side had defeated Ashbourne Community School,  Meath, Carr agreed that it was a step up from winning an Ulster minor club medal.

"Yeah, to be honest, it would be. An All-Ireland, it's just great for the lads who worked so hard all year.

"Jamie Brennan is looking at me here, a super coach, who coached us so well to get us here. It's hard to believe to be honest, it's an incredible group of boys,” said Carr.

The current county minor player replicated  his display from New Year’s Day when Four Masters defeated Cavan Gaels to lift the minor club title. He was a bundle of energy that day, the main link between defence and attack and it was a similar story on Saturday last in Clones as he ran Kevin Muldoon close for the man of the match award.

The groundwork for the 1-15 to 0-9 win was done in the opening half when Abbey took advantage of the breeze to lead 0-10 to 0-3 at the break.

Carr agreed that it was one of their best halves of the season.

"Other than the semi-final this year. The kicking was very good from Conor Meehan and the boy inside, we kept it ticking over. That's what we had to do the whole game. And luckily in the second half, we got the goal  to put them to bed.”

They had to withstand a strong comeback from Ashbourne, especially in the third quarter and Carr felt the breeze was a real factor in that.

"It was hard to  adjust to the breeze. It was probably stronger than it felt in the stand. We were able to settle down after the first five minutes. They were always going to get their purple patch, but we were never in doubt.

"We got it together then in the end, so we're happy out.”

There was no disputing that Abbey VS were the better team over the hour and Carr felt they could have been further ahead at the break if they had shown a bit more  composure when goal chances appeared.

"We were a bit unfortunate in the first half. We could have had more of a gap, but it didn't matter in the end.”

It was another big day for the Carr household. Turlough had younger brother Tomás by his side when he won his Ulster club medal and on Saturday his older brother, Seanán was team captain.

"It's a privilege to be playing with my older brother (Seanán), he's leading me on," said Turlough, who said younger brother Tomás would be well able for that level also.

He also paid tribute to the players from Naomh Brid and St Naul’s on the Abbey side. "It's great to have them in. It was unreal.”

But with an All-Ireland schools medal in his pocket, Turlough Carr is not resting on his laurels and looking forward to the season.

"I'll be playing Ulster minor this year and pushing for another Ulster title or All-Ireland, you wouldn't know.”
