Cill Chartha's James McHugh sees his son Eoin follow in his footsteps 25 years on

Eoin McHugh captained Cill Chartha to success in the Donegal Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta final on Monday, just like this father James did back in 1999

James and Eoin McHugh completed a unique father-and-son combination in winning  the Donegal Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta as captains.

James skippered the Towney-based side to success in 1999, when they defeated Dungloe 1-9 to 0-10 at the Banks, with Michael Hegarty - the current senior team manager - kicking five points and Ruairí Boyle hitting 1-3. James collected the trophy that day from Paddy Mac Giolla Easpuig. The national competition that year at Ring in Waterford on June Bank Holiday was won by Kerry's An Ghaeltacht, who defeated Chill Chartha in the semi-final 2-10 to 1-10.

Last week, Eoin was the man leading the line at Pairc Naomh Fionnan, the home of Cloughaneely, with Chill Cartha winning out the domestic decider on a scoreline of 0-12 to 0-10 against Gaoth Dobhair, with Matthew McClean scoring eight points. Charlie Ó Dónaill, secretary of Donegal Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta, who was there in 1999, and retiring Chathaoirleach Seosamh Ó Dubhchoin made the presentation.
