Four Masters manager Kevin Sinclair
While Four Masters are running high in Division 2 at the minute and look like serious contenders for promotion to Division 1, their team manager Kevin Sinclair admits that his side is not getting ahead of themselves and has a lot more to do before they are the finished article.
The Donegal Town side overcame local rivals St Naul’s on Friday evening in Tír Conaill Park with ease on a 1-12 to 0-6 point scoreline, with Masters keeping their rivals to one point from play and boasting seven different scorers in the process in what was a fine performance from the boys in blue.
And while team manager Sinclair was happy with the performance and confident of a victory, he acknowledges there is more work to be done while focusing on the fact that St Naul’s were absent at least six players on the day through county commitment and injury.
“We scored 1-12 which isn’t bad, we’re happy with that considering it’s a local derby but St Naul’s were missing a lot of players too on the day,” said Sinclair.
“We came in expecting to win that game. Defensively we’re probably one of the better teams in the league, but I suppose it’s the other side we need to start getting right now, just in the continuity going forward, but we’re getting there, we’re improving all the time . . . I like to think we’re improving.
“When I saw what St Naul’s were missing, they can add five or six quality players, never mind the county players, they have three or four other lads that would really strengthen them. I think they have one or two players not going too well in terms of injury, but look we can’t look at them, we can only look at ourselves and we’re happy.”
With Four Masters now sitting in second position in Division 2, only three points behind Killybegs, the club has come a long way from Division 3 a number of years ago.
With a volume of momentum now behind them and the introduction of some successful youth players to steer them into the last number of games in the league, all would point to a Four Masters promotion, but Sinclair just wants to take it game by game.
“We’re just taking it one game at a time,” he said. “The next three games are against three teams that beat us last year, so we have a big road ahead of us if we are to get promoted, but we’re not getting ahead of ourselves, we’re happy with the lads’ performance.
“Callum McCrea made his debut last week but got more into it this week, then we have other young players like Conor Reid who is going very well . . . I mean the youth are showing very well, but we also have lads like Dylan Kennedy and Caolan Loughney and Oisin Reid who are knitting it together, we’re happy with them overall but there’s a long way to go yet.”
