Jonny Carlin featured for Wicklow as they overcame Leitrim in the Tailteann Cup preliminary quarter-final on Saturday evening.

Carlin, who has previously played for Red Hugh’s and Setanta and won a Wicklow IFC medal last October, is in his first year with Oisín McConville’s side and no doubt took great joy from yesterday’s win in what was a 2-15 to 1-11 victory.

The Donegal native made an appearance midway through the second-half and helped his side overcome the Connacht men.

Led by the hugely influential Dean Healy, Oisin McConville’s side turned a 1-7 to 1-4 half-time deficit when playing against a stiff breeze into a convincing 2-15 to 1-11 victory by the time Tyrone referee Kieran Eannetta sounded his final whistle.

Andy Moran’s side failed to build enough of a cushion with the wind at their backs, Barry McNulty’s goal after 29 minutes looking like it was going to set them on their way at 1-6 to 0-4 ahead only for JP Nolan’s pass across the Leitrim goal a few moments later to end up in the back of the net, the score coming off the immense effort of Dean Healy out the field.

With Barry McNulty causing Wicklow major issues, Oisin McConville sent in Jonny Carlin to try and curb the midfielder’s impact and the Donegal man did so superbly.

Wicklow were full value for their win having come close to raising green flags on at least four occasions apart from the two they did bag.
