Declan Bonner’s team eased into gear in 2021’s championship, which was straight knockout due to the coronavirus pandemic, with Patrick McBrearty hitting 1-6 and Jamie Brennan accounting for 1-1 in a echoey Pairc Esler in Newry, with crowd restrictions. Donegal’s total of 31 points remains the most they’ve ever scored in a championship match.
They would go on to pip Rory Gallagher’s Derry 0-16 to 0-15 in Ballybofey thanks to a late McBrearty point only to lose out to eventual All-Ireland champions Tyrone on a 0-23 to 1-4 scoreline in Enniskillen in the provincial semi-final.
