The GAA community in West Fermanagh and south Donegal were in shock today with news of the sudden passing of former Fermanagh player and mentor, Paul Coyle.

Born just yards from the Donegal border, Coyle was one of the top forwards in the country in the 1990s and would have been one of Fermanagh’s best when they met Donegal in their All-Ireland winning year of 1992. He possessed a very accurate left boot and was regularly top scorer for his county club.

He had a distinguished career with Devenish and Fermanagh and later became assistant county manager of his county. He later played with Loughmacrory in Tyrone and Swatragh in Derry where he settled down.

There were tributes paid online by Fermanagh GAA and Devenish GAA club.

A spokesperson said: "Fermanagh GAA are saddened to hear of the sudden death of our former Devenish St. Mary's and County player Paul Coyle. We extend our deepest sympathy to Paul's wife Sally, children Aoife, Peadar, Niall, Emer, Meabh and Fergal, mother Breege, brothers and sisters Patsy, Caroline, Sharon, Adrian, Declan and Kevin and wider family circle.”

The Devenish club tribute read:

“It was with deep regret, sadness and shock that we learned of the death of our past player and friend, Paul Coyle. We offer our deepest condolences to his wife Sally and his children Aoife, Peadar, Niall, Emer, Meabh and Fergal.

We offer our deepest sympathies to his mother Breege and his brothers and sisters Kevin, Declan, Adrian, Patsy, Sharon and Caroline. We extend our sympathies to the wider Coyle and Mooney family circle. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time and in the days ahead.

Paul had a distinguished playing career with Devenish and Fermanagh GAA, winning five senior championship medals and five senior leagues. He claimed Sigerson and Ryan Cup medals with Ulster University Gaelic Academy in 1987 and was also a Freshers captain.

He later went on to play for Loch Mhic Ruairí Naomh Treasa GAA and Michael Davitt GAC Swatragh.

He will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by everyone associated with Devenish St Mary's.
