The Donegal U-16s suffered late, late heartbreak in St Tiernach’s Park, Clones on Sunday when they were knocked out of the Buncrana Cup with a late goal from Monaghan.

Donegal only needed a draw to secure second place in their group and a semi-final slot, but after coming back from six points down at half-time to draw level, they lost out with the last kick of the game.

Three Shane Sweeney points and one from Cathal  McGee left Donegal trailing by 1-7 to 0-4 at half-time. The introduction of substitutes saw them perform really well in the second half, notching 1-8.

The goal came from Kalvin McLaughlin, who also got a point while their other second half scores came from Kyle Bonner 0-2 and a point each from John Paul Gallagher, Michael Gallagher, Jamie Gavigan, Jack Gallagher and Sean Sweeney.

The result means that Donegal will now play in the semi-final  of the Shield, which is set for Saturday, August 3rd.
