Termon expecting tough battle from up-and-coming Aodh Ruadh in league final

The ladies side from the Burn Road will hope to win back their league title when they face off against Aodh Ruadh Ballyshannon this Sunday in MacCumhaill Park

Termon might enter this Sunday’s Division 1 league final in Ballybofey as slight favourites, but team manager Adrian McGettigan knows that his Ballyshannon opposition are side brimming with confidence and they can’t afford to take anything for granted.

Despite beating Aodh Ruadh in the league earlier this season, the Termon side has still not forgotten the pain the Ballyshannon ladies inflicted last season when they travelled to the Burn Road and defeated the home side.

So, despite what people may be saying, McGettigan feels it will be a closer encounter than people may feel.

We played Aodh Ruadh in the league in Termon last year and they turned us over and beat us by five points,” the Termon boss said.

Now we did end up beating them in Ballyshannon this season, but it was really tough game and I think we got a few goals near the end of the match which widened the margin of the scoreline and didn’t give a true reflection of how tough the game really was.

We know that Aodh Ruadh are a team on the up and believe me, we’ll be leaving nothing to chance on the day. No final is easy won and we’ll be expecting a serious game.”

For Aodh Ruadh, Sunday’s final will be one of their biggest games ever. From a position where they were unable to field a team five years ago, they have won the Intermediate Championship, Division 2 of the League and are now in the Division 1 league final.

It is our biggest game of the last four or five years,” says manager, Paul Gillespie. “We have a very young squad of players and this is a big game after getting promoted to Division 1 just two years ago. We won the Division 2 league that year.”

The Ballyshannon based club have made great progress at underage level and at senior level.

We got to the Division 1 League semi-final last year and it was an away game. Our aim this year was to get to a home league semi-final and we achieved that,” the manager said.

We defeated Naomh Conaill in that semi-final and we are now in the final. However, we are under no illusions. We are up against a Termon team that is basically a star-studded county team.

But we’re delighted to be there and to get a crack at it,” said Gillespie.
