The Burt senior hurlers lost to Setanta by eight points
It looked bright for Burt when they led by 3-6 to 0-10 with halftime beckoning in this thriller in the Cross.
They opened up the Setanta full-back line with the aid of the slight slope and hit three goals in the space of six minutes.
Those goals stunned the home side and half time came at an opportune time which allowed this vastly experienced side to regroup and emerge with renewed vigour in the second half.
A disappointed Liam McKinney said afterwards; “we were going well just before half time and maybe it came at a bad time for us.
“We struggled to get going in the second half and they got an early goal which brought them back into it.
“But we just did not seem to get going-especially in the forward line,” said the Burt man following his side’s 2-22 to 3-11 point defeat to Setanta
However, McKinney did admit that Burt’s defence did quite well for large parts of the game but just couldn’t get the scores on the board which may have resulted in a drop in intensity.
“We just could not get any link-up play in the forwards in the second half and there was no real good quality ball going into the forwards and Setanta were pretty much in control.
“We struggled to get a score and conditions were good.
“But our work rate dropped in the second half compared to the first half and I am not quite sure what that was really.
“We just struggled to score in the second half and we just hit 0-3 and that is probably what lost us the game.”
So, what are the lessons to be learned?
“A lot of this team were in the county final two years ago and we were coming again last year, but we fell short today,” he said.
“But we have a chance of getting to the county final if we can beat St Eunan’s next week in Burt and that will be a tough task.
“But those are the challenges you need to overcome if you want to win a county title.”
Burt haven’t won a title since 2018 and that is real famine by their high standards.
“If we beat Eunan’s we are in the final, so we have a huge week coming up.”
