St Michael's started their championship campaign on a high with a win against Killybegs.
Michael McGinley was naturally very pleased that his St Michael’s side have two points on the board following their four-point win over Killybegs at the Bridge on Saturday night.
And no doubt they’ll take great confidence as they head to Ardara next weekend for what promises to be a tricky assignment for the men in red and white.
“We are happy with the win because it is important to win your home game and get points on the board,” McGinley told Donegal Live afterwards.
And the playmaker who was one of his team’s standout performers, who also put two points to his name, was also happy with the overall performance in what were windy conditions.
“We worked very hard in the first half and we took our scores well and really laid the foundation for the win,” he stated.
“We were three points up at half-time and in a good position given the strength of the wind. We would have been happy to go in level at half time such was the strength of the wind.
“We took our scores well and while I’m not sure if Carlos O’Reilly was going for a goal, it was a timely score coming so soon after Killybegs scored their goal.
“It was a matter of going out in the second half and containing them and adding on a few scores ourselves.”
But an Odhran McGuinness point followed by a Paul Cunningham goal shortly after tied up the game at 1-7 to 2-4 which gave Killybegs a glimmer of hope, but the home side stayed strong.
“Colin (McFadden) and Eddie O’Reilly kicked three points in the middle of the half and we pulled away. From then on it was a matter of seeing out the game,” McGinley said.
“It was a good overall performance. We took our scores well and I thought our defence was very tight and disciplined and gave very little away.
“We are away to Ardara next and it is a matter of getting our heads down and preparing well for that challenge.”
