Gary Wilson insists MacCumhaills were ready for a real battle against Killybegs and quite content to come away with a two-point win.

The visitors played with a stiff breeze in the opening half of Saturday’s SFC clash and exited with a 1-6 to 0-2 lead.

However, the hosts were much improved after the restart and were right on their opponents’ coattails by the final whistle in a contest that ended 1-12 to 1-10.

“That breeze coming in of the Atlantic, we knew it was going to be a game of two halves,” said Wilson after.

“We were hanging on there at the end. Some of the bookies would need to take a look at their odds lines because that was never a 4/1 game for us.

“Killybegs have serious tradition and coming up here, they were always going to give it a real rattle. And it was a great battle.

“We had to earn the win and we’re just thankful we came out on the right side of things”.

Pauric Bonner had to make do without the likes of Eoghan Ban Gallagher, Jon Ban Gallagher and Cillian Gildea.

But he’d still have widened his eyes with the news that MacCumhaills were shy the services of ace scoring pair Oisin Gallen and Joel Bradley Walsh as well as county panellist Sean Martin.

Wilson agrees that those absentees certainly left MacCumhaills feeling a little vulnerable at the weekend.

“Losing that type of quality, and they were down men too; so we won’t use that as an excuse. But without a doubt, we lost their contribution on the scoreboard.

“But at the halfway mark in the group, we’re delighted to be on four points. We’ll see what comes with the draw. But we’ve achieved nothing yet. We certainly can’t rest on our laurels”.
