Captain Eoin McHugh was one of the standout players on Saturday
Kilcar man Eoin McHugh admits that his side is taking the 2024 championship campaign one game at a time as they secured their second win on the bounce, following their 0-18 to 1-8 win over Glenfin on Saturday.
Alongside teammate Patrick McBrearty, the midfielder was one of the standout players on a day that saw the men from Towney ease to victory, in what was an all-round super performance from the 2017 Donegal champions.
And while there may be some skepticism this season towards where Kilcar lies in order of championship contenders, their previous two performances against St Naul’s and Glenfin show that they are not down and out just yet.
But the Kilcar captain for now is not looking past the next game. Listening to outside voices does not appear to be a feature in the Kilcar squad.
“It’s a cliche maybe, but you have to win all these games, that’s the goal at the start before you even step onto the field, so the scoreline doesn’t really matter as long as you get the win,” McHugh said regarding his side’s massive win away to Glenfin.
“We got a good lead early in the match, but we conceded a bad goal and probably should’ve won by more in the end. But you can not but be happy with two points at the end of the day.”
Despite Kilcar leading the match by a large scoreline throughout, the players never took their foot off the accelerator and were always looking for perfect play on the field. Something no doubt they’ve been working on since their upsetting defeat to St Eunan’s in the opening round of the championship two weeks ago.
“I suppose you have to pick each other out on mistakes we’re making if we want to get better as a team in the long run, but look a win’s a win, we’ll take it, move on, and look towards the next game in two weeks,” he said.
“I think the St Eunan’s game was a great learning curve. We filtered a lot of men back into the team and back into the panel, and we’ll try and get a few more boys back for the next game too and you’ll never know where that may take us.”
With four points secured after three games, Kilcar will play one more match before, hopefully from their point of view, advance to the knockout stages, but the Kilcar midfielder once again alludes to the fact that his side are not getting ahead of themselves and it doesn’t matter to them who they draw in the next round.
“I think if you try to avoid people, you’ll end up getting them and if you start asking for people, you’ll not get them, so, we don’t mind who the draw gives us, it’s been a good championship so far and there’s been a lot of teams knocking at that door for the top four spot, and we want to be one of them.”
