The return of Ódhran McFadden Ferry will be a boost to Gaoth Dobhair - and possibly even Donegal - in the coming months.

McFadden Ferry was with the Gaoth Dobhair panel on Saturday as they posted an impressive 1-7 to 0-9 Donegal SFC win at St Eunan’s, although manager Ronan Mac Niallais says he is not yet in his plans in regards to a playing return. McFadden Ferry played a part in Gaoth Dobhair’s warm-up before watching the match from the main stand at O'Donnell Park.

“I don’t think we’ll be able to call on Ódhran yet,” Gaoth Dobhair manager Mac Niallais said in Letterkenny. “He suffered a bad injury earlier in the year so we’re more looking about having him for next season.

“We’ll have him about though, with his knowledge and experience when needs be, so it would be great for him if we did get him on the pitch but I think it’s all a bit too soon for him. He’s just really doing some rehab on the side and looking forward to getting back as soon as he can."

McFadden Ferry helped Gaoth Dobhair to both the Donegal SFC and Ulster Club SFC in 2018 and made his Donegal debut in the 2019 Ulster final win over Cavan.

A tough man-marker and also comfortable at wing-back, he was a goalscorer for Declan Bonner’s side in the 2022 1-16 to 1-14 extra-time loss to Derry in the provincial final in Clones. Later that summer, he picked up an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and a similar injury early this year. Since last playing for Donegal in 2022, he has spent time in Western Australia.
