Caolan O'Neill gets his shot away against Carndonagh
Caolan O’Neill admitted that Buncrana’s historic IHC win was ‘the stuff of dreams’ as he savoured a 0-15 to 1-10 win over rivals Carndonagh.
It didn’t look good for O’Neill and his teammates shortly after half-time when Cathal Doherty’s goal opened up a four-point gap.
In a game that had, up until that point, bordered on cagey, Buncrana threw the shackles off with spectacular results.
They’d ping the next six points to eventually move 0-12 to 1-7 clear. And down the stretch, they held their nerve to take a two-point win - their first ever at this grade.
“It’s amazing really,” admitted O’Neill, who chalked a personal tally of 0-7 in Letterkenny. “We went in at half-time and the plan was, with the wind, to start tagging on points.
“But Carn hit us with that goal right away. It was a nightmare start really. But fair play to the lads they dug in and showed real character.
“I’m really proud of that - the response I mean. But it kinda was the spur we needed as we just went for it. We knew it was going to be so tight.
“We’ve put in a massive effort this season so the plan is to celebrate this. It’s the stuff of dreams for Buncrana. You can see from the scenes just what it means to the club and it’s supporters.”
