Mogan powers St Naul's to victory over Cloughaneely in relegation final in Glenswilly

St Naul's 2-7
Cloughaneely 0-5

Peadar Mogan picked up an Irish News All-Star on Friday night and he was the star for St Naul's as they accounted for Cloughaneely in the SFC relegation play-off in Glenswilly on Saturday.

The St Naul's side played against the stiff breeze in the opening half and it took them some time to come to terms with it but a scrambled goal on the stroke of half-time had them a point ahead and they never looked in trouble.

Peadar Mogan fired home a second goal and the final margin of seven points didn't flatter St Naul's.

Cloughaneely suffered a huge blow after just a minute when Darren McGeever was forced off with a leg injury. Ciaran McGeady replaced him and did so with some energy. St Naul's had more of the ball but McGeady set up Shaun Maguire for the opening point on nine minutes.

Peadar Mogan replied within 30 seconds, stealing in along the endline and fisting over. Darren Ferry edged Cloughaneely back in front but then St Naul's had the ball in the Cloughaneely net on 12 minutes but the palmed effort by Kian McCabe was ruled out for a square ball. The goal came about after an effort from Stephen Griffin was short and Griffin was in on goal, offloading to McCabe.

Darren Ferry doubled the Cloughaneely lead and Blake McGarvey fired just over the crossbar when breaking through on 15 minutes.

St Naul's lost Daniel Gallagher to injury but they finished the half well. Gavin Mulreany came forward to point from play while Joe Campbell and Peadar Mogan were denied by woodwork.

Then two minutes into added time St Naul's got the goal they were looking forward with Joe Campbell involved at the start, finding Michael Coughlan, whose effort was blocked. There was a scramble and Declan Duignan finished from close range.
Half-time: St Naul's 1-2, Cloughaneely 0-4.

It took eight minutes into the second half for the first score. A long range free by Gavin Mulreany was fielded by Stephen Griffin and he swivelled and pointed.

The Parish of Inver side took another giant step towards safety when Thomas White got on to a break after a Mulreany kick-out and found Peadar Mogan inside and he fired to the roof of Shaun McClafferty's net.

Joe Campbell added another point and Stephen Griffin put seven points between the sides from a free with seven minutes left.

Blake McGarvey cut the lead while St Naul's had a second goal disallowed as Thomas White found Michael Coughlan, but the referee blew for another square ball.

They almost had a third goal when Thomas White had an open goal but his effort came back of the crossbar and Joe Campbell picked up the rebound and pointed. Peadar Mogan added another as the Cloughaneely challenge faded.
